Devotions on the Spirit of God

THE FLOW OF THE SPIRIT

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

Trees function as up side down funnels for water. They defy gravity and draw water from the ground to supply leaves at the top. How is this accomplished?

During photosynthesis, tree leaves transpire water as a cooling mechanism. As the water vapor departs, there is a pull on the water like a straw in a glass reaching all the way down the tree through the roots to the water in the ground. Water molecules on the surface of water strongly cling to each other.

The water system in the tree is made up of slender threads, so that all the water in the tree is surface water. Evaporation in the leaves pulls the water all the way through the tree. This pulling pressure is over 2,000 pounds per square inch.

This liquid is the life blood of the tree. It allows the tree to be interrelated. Sap is filtered by cell walls and is made purer than a mountain stream. Trees use the sap to transport dissolved nutrients to the different parts of the tree. Food manufactured by the leaves is transported by the sap and is used to fuel more growth.

If the leaves of the tree aren't photosynthesizing, the flow of sap won't be drawn into the tree because the need for water to replace that which is being used by the leaves is not needed.

Christians will experience the same problem if they aren't working in accordance to God's will. As the sap is to trees, so is the Holy Spirit to Christians. We can count on the Holy Spirit to supply our needs and to direct us. (Isaiah 30:15, James 1:5)

The purity of sap, points to the purity that God's Word creates in us as it is taught by the Holy Spirit. Through we can read and learn what the Bible says, it is the Holy Spirit that leads us in practical applications of spiritual truths. (I Corinthians 2:12)

Bible reading, prayer, fellowship, church attendance, serving and giving are ingredients of service that allow the Holy Spirit to flow in us. As we obey God, we will have a fuller measure of God's Spirit. (Acts 5:32)

What would happen if the tree said to itself, "I don't think the sap will always be there when I need it. I'm going to protect my leaves from the burning rays of the sun"? The lack of the leaves' need for water to cool them, would stop the suction that provides the sap. Leaves would stop .producing food, which would eventually cause the death of the tree. Christians face the same dilemma. If they stop serving God in self interest, the flow of the Spirit will stop in their lives. If this condition continues, spiritual death results.

As we meditate on the water of God's Word, His truths permeate our hearts. Then, in the time of testing, we can draw from this spiritual reservoir.

When people offer alcohol or drugs, or when other temptations come, God will give us the right answer and the peace within us that no thrill the world offers could provide. (John 15:16, Luke 21:12-15)

Don't doubt God's provision in your life. Trust Him, for He has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you". (Hebrews 13:5 KJV)
