"Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us."
Ephesians 3:20

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." 2 Cor. 3:17

Jesus the Head

One of Aesop's fables shows a good parallel to Christian principles. It was titled "The Belly and the Other Members". It said that in ancient days the different members of the human body did not cooperate as they do today. At one point the members began to criticize the belly for being lazy.

The members decided that they were going to stop supporting the belly by not giving it any more food. Lo and behold in a small amount of time in trying to starve the belly into subjection, the different parts of the body became weak and weren't able to their job at all. In the end, the members realized that the belly was important to their well being, even though it seemed to be cumbersome and useless.

As in the body, so with our relationship with God, it is to our benefit to be in tune and obedient to Jesus.

Our ability to flow in the Spirit depends upon our fear and reverence for Him. Flowing in the Spirit also entails obedience to what God says to us, communication which involves prayer and waiting on the Lord, cooperating with the rest of the Christians and having a living relationship with Jesus. Without these the body would not function as it should.

What are the reasons that people don't want to cooperate with Jesus?

  1. Not interested in spiritual things.
  2. Afraid that God will make us do something that we don't want to do.
  3. Don't want to do what God would tell us to do.
  4. Have sin in our life that we don't want to give up.
  5. Don't believe God can back up what He says.
  6. Doubt our ability to do the job.

What is the solution to these objections?

1. Not to be interested in spiritual things is to be asleep spiritually (Eph. 5:14).

To regain life in the Spirit, pray for a burden for lost souls (Rom. 10:1; 1 Cor. 9:20-22; Lk. 13:34). Pray for a love for God (Jn. 13:34; 1 Jn. 4:7). Pray for a hunger for His word (Ps. 42:1; 63:1; 119:20,40,131). Pray and encourage yourself in the Lord (1 Sam. 30:6; Lam. 3:21-23; Phil. 4:6,7; 2 Chron. 16:9). Expect God to move in your life in answer to your prayers. (Zeph. 1:12; Ps. 37:7; 62:5). Pray that God would lead you in building a good foundation for the future (1 Tim. 6:17-19; Isa. 28:16; Rom. 9:33;). Ask for God's love to move in your life (1 Pt. 1:22; Gal. 5:6). Worship Him even when you don't feel like it (Ps. 34:1; Eph. 5:20; 1 Thes. 5:18; Ps. 71:8,14,15; 145:2). Read the Bible-even when you don't seem to be getting anything out of it (Josh. 1:8; Ps. 119:10). Ask for spiritual eyes to see the value of the cross of Christ in your life (Eph. 1:18; 2 Cor. 4:6). Ask for patience and peace to listen to the still small voice of God (Jer. 33:3; Hab. 2:1; Ps. 5:3; Ps. 130:5). Ask for a sense of His presence (Ps. 16:8; Gen. 5:24; Jn. 15:7). Obey in faith and the Spirit of God will come (Acts 5:32; Jn. 14:23).

2. We are afraid that God will make us do something that we don't want to do.

Set our mind on the things of the Spirit. If we set our mind on the things of the Spirit, then we will not be so intimidated by the will of God (Rom. 8:6). God will lead us by His Spirit and will mold us according to His will, (Jer. 18:3-6) to do the things that He has prepared for us to do (Eph. 2:10). Like a child that is taught to do things he doesn't want to do, the Lord will guide us to do things that will be new for us, but as we do them, we will grow to like them and be confident in it.

3. Don't want to do what God would tell us to do.

Expect God to move in your life, in answer to your prayers. Zeph. 1:12

If God tells us to do something and we don't want to do it, there is only one thing to do and that is to submit to the leadership of Jesus. Have we made Jesus our Lord? If we lay down our life, He will give us life abundantly (Jn. 10:10; Mk. 10:21-31). If we hang onto our life we will lose it ( Lk. 9:23,24). God has our best interests at heart. He will guide us into what is best for us.

4. Have sin in our life that we don't want to give up.

God can give us victory over sin. If we like our sin, the Scripture says that there is pleasure in sin for a season (Heb. 11:25). If there was no pleasure, then why would people sin? After this there will be a reaping. For whatever a man sows that will he also reap (Gal. 6:7). As we spend more time with Jesus repentance will come. Don't try to keep rules of not sinning but focus on Jesus and pleasing Him (Rom. 7:24-8:2).

5. Don't believe God can back up what He says.

If we don't believe God will back up what He says, then we should spend more time with Jesus. If we want to believe meditate on His word (Jn. 7:37,38). To believe God is to accept Him at His word and trust that what He says is going to happen. Meditation and prayer on the promises of God will destroy unbelief. Let the word richly x__ dwell within you (Col. 3:16).

6. Doubt our ability to do the job.

Our lack of trust in ourselves is good. Lack of trust in the ability of God to use us is not good. Remember that it is God in us doing the work (Phil. 2:13). We are not serving God by ourselves; we are the branches, Jesus is the vine. A branch by itself can do nothing. It is as it abides in the vine that it bears much fruit (Jn. 15). Abide in Jesus and the answer will come to accomplish the work (Jn. 15:7).

"But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of the every man, and the man is the head of the women, and God is the head of Christ" (1 Cor. 11:3).

"And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body which fill all in all" (Eph. 1:22,23).

"But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ" (Eph. 4:15).

"For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body" (Eph. 5:23).

"He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything" (Col. 1:18). "Not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and held together by the the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth which is from God" (Col. 2:19).
