Heart's Desire

"Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it." (Ps. 37:4,5) "Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and Thou hast not with- held the request of his lips." (Ps 21:2) "He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and will save them." (Ps 145:19) "Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened." (Matt. 7:7,8) "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you." (Jn. 15:7 )

What does it mean to delight in something? Delight to be soft or pliable. (Strong's) To be delicate, to delight in anything (Wilson's) A high degree of gratification of mind or sense; extreme satisfaction. Anything that gives great pleasure Power of affording pleasurable emotion Syn. see pleasure from (Webster's)

What is it to delight yourself in the Lord? To delight in the Lord is to allow the Lord to mold us into His image. It is to desire to be with Him over other areas of our life.

How do we motivate ourselves to delight ourselves in the Lord? Isa 58:14 "Then you will take delight in the Lord . ." The verse before shows us that the one who keeps the Sabbath and obeys the commands of the Lord will take delight in the Lord. Delight follows a set of actions of devotion to the Lord. Where our treasure is there will our heart be also. (Matt. 6:21) To serve God means time with Him and this becomes part of what we treasure. This is not a formula, because if one does this by rote and does not have his heart in it he will be burdened by the law. If we live by the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:2,5) we will not die but live. Set your mind on the things of the Spirit and you will live. (Rom. 8:5,6) We can also pray for the right motivation. (Phil. 2:13)

What are the desires of our heart? One of the ways I know that it is a desire of my heart is if it keeps coming back. This could either be good or bad. Covetousness is also a desire of the heart. That is why we should delight ourselves in the Lord first. As we are close to God the Holy Spirit will show us the difference between the good and the bad. As we follow God, then the desires of our heart will be pure before the Lord.

What are the pitfalls to these desires? Many Christians use this passage to prove we can squander the Lord's possessions on ourselves. The Bible is full of examples of people who lived for themselves and not the Lord. Israelis spoken of in Amos 6:1 were at ease while others were hurting. The people of Sodom were not concerned about the needs of others. Ezk 16:49 It is easy to rationalize and think that what our flesh wants is of the Lord. To understand the principles of God we need to look at the whole Bible. The cross of Christ speaks of laying aside our life, that the life of the Spirit may grow. (John 12:24) Our desires are what we want. The cross is denial of self. How do these to go together. The Bible is not a system of concepts, but it is alive. (Heb 4:12) God will show us the way to go. There are times of planting and there are times of growth, the cross and abundance. In the Spirit we will have joy with Jesus either way. If we are content with how God leads us, we are in the Spirit and can know that our heart is right before Him. If we are struggling to keep things, we are in the flesh and are not wholly devoted to the Lord. Live by the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Set your mind on the things of the Spirit, not the flesh.

How do you commit your way to the Lord? Amplified Bible -"Commit your way to the Lord - roll and repose [each care of] your load on Him" (Ps. 37:5) Ps 55:22 "Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken." "Casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you." (1 Pt. 5:7 ) "Casting the whole of your care - all your anxieties, all your worries, all our concerns, once and for all - on Him; for He cares for you affectionately, and cares about you watchfully." (1 Pt. 5:7Amplified) How do you cast these cares on Jesus? By the means of prayer. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you." (Phil. 4:6,7,8,9) What does this Scripture say to do? 1. Pray with supplication and thanksgiving. 2. Let your mind dwell on the things that are uplifting. 3. Practice what you have learned. Then God's peace will come.

God will do it! The promises of the Bible are real! God will fulfill all he has said to you. If we believe we will see the glory of God. (Jn. 11:40) The glory of God contains the power of God. (Rom 6:4)
